Gil Casa Jr. and John Vincent Merabe scored convincing victories in the fifth round of the National age-group chess championship in Cadiz city. Casa beat Mark Adrian Ong in 40 moves of their Sicilian encounter to lead the Boys Under-10 division. Ong resigned in a lost endgame in 45 moves. Casa sits comfortably at the top with 5 points followed by Adrian de Luna with 4 points.
Merabe, the pride of Cadiz city shattered Edgar Escobia's Slav defense and produced a dangerous passed pawn on the sixth rank. Escobia defended well but Mirabe's tactical move in the 30th turn nails the point in the Boys under-16 division. He has now in the lead with 4 points followed by Spencer de Guzman and Robert Ace Cabras all with 3 points.
In other result, Kenneth Allen Ballo-allo leads the Boys under-12 with 4 points while Valerio Mangubat dominates the under-14 with the same number of points.
In Girls Under-14 and Under-10 result, Methusellah Hoban and Natorri Biazza Diaz are on top with 5 points and 4.5 points respectively.
The champion in each category will advance to the grand finals in June.
