Kristel Shayne Herrera
Kristel Shayne Herrera, Robert Ace Cabras and John Vincent Merabe all from host Cadiz city rule the just-concluded National age group chess championships held at the multi-purpose hall of Cadiz city, Negros Occidental.
Herrera dominated the Girls Under-20 with 3.5 points while Cabras and Merabe topped the Boys Under-16 plum with the same 4.5 points. The trio will represent Western Visayas in the grand finals.
Other qualifiers in the boys division include: Fritz Bryan Porraz (U-20, Robert Ace Cabras (U-16), Valerio Mangubat and Jeffu Dorog (U-14), Cyril Felrod Telesforo and Kenneth Allen Ballo-allo (U-12), Gil Casa Jr. (U-10) and Mark Jay Bacojo (U-8).
In the Girls section, those who also made it to the grand finals are: Cristy Cabungcag (U-14), Natorri Biaza Diaz (U-12), Methusellah Hoban (U-10) and Zhem Ong (U-8).
Organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)headed by Chairman/President Prospero Pichay, the event is also supported by Bayan Muna Party list Representative Neri Javier Colmenares and Cadiz city Mayor Patrick Escalante.
Backed by full sponsorship of Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel, the next leg of the age group chess will be held on January 31-February 3 in General Santos city.
