Local bets held their ground, dominating the competition in the recently concluded 2012 Gov. Oscar S. Moreno National Age Group Chess Championships held at the Provincial Capitol Grounds of Misamis Oriental.
Cagayan de Oro’s Lennon Hart Salgados drew with Bhell Ortiz in the final round to amass a total of 5 points, edging McDominique Lagula of Nueva Vizcaya by half a point to capture the Championship in the Boys 20 under category.
Misamis Oriental players Ronald Canino likewise got 5 points to take home the trophy in the Boys 10 under category while brother Romeo Canino tallied 5.5 points out of six games to win the championship in the 12 under boys group.
The battle in the boys 8 under category was nerve racking, top seed and erstwhile leader Alekhine Nouri of Negros Occidental province who only needed a draw to claim the top prize, drop his last game losing to Billy Samuel Ventanilla of North Cotabato who emerged as champion by “winner over the other” tie break rule.
Daryl Unix Samantila (NCR-Malabon) tallied a perfect score in the boys 14 under category while Austin Jacob Literatus of Davao City had 5.5 in the boys 16 under category to emerge as Champions and joined other category champions in the delegation to represent the Philippines in the 2012 ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships to be held in Hue, Vietnam on June 10 – 20, 2012.
In the girls division, Misamis Oriental woodpushers Methusellah Ramos and Me Ann Joy Baclayon routed their opponents with perfect slates to take home the trophies in the Girls 8 under and 10 under categories respectively. Another local player Alyssa Ysaiah Jamaca also took home the grand prize in the girls 16 under category.
Far Eastern University’s WNM Janelle Mae Frayna of Legazpi City, also the Champion of under 16 girls Luzon Leg in Sta.Rosa, Laguna, likewise remained unbeaten to take home the Championship in the Girls 20 under category demonstrated her superior preparation and training “Hope my winnings will continue up to Grandfinals and win the gold medal in Vietnam” says Frayna
The other category champions are Ella Grace Moulic of Davao in Girls 14 under with 4.5 points and Natori Biazza (Negros Occidental) who scored 5.5 points out of six games in Girls 12 under.
The Champions will be joined by the top five placers in each category in the Grand Finals to be held on April 23 – 30, 2012 in Tanauan City, Batangas.
