The Mindanao leg of the 2012 National Age Group and Juniors Chess Championships dubbed as the 2012 Governor Oscar S. Moreno National Age Group and Juniors Chess Championships gets underway on March 24, 2012 at the Misamis Oriental Provincial Capitol Ground.
Hosted and sponsored by the Province of Misamis Oriental, headed by Governor Oscar S. Moreno and organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by Chairman/President Prospero A. Pichay, Jr. and Secretary General Tagaytay Mayor Abraham N. Tolentino, the champions in the Age Group will earn outright berths to the 2012 ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships in Hue, Vietnam.
The top five (5) finishers in each category in the age Group and the Juniors, will qualify for the Grand Finals to be held in Tanuan, Batangas from April 23 – 30, 2012, and vie for a slot in the delegation to represent the country in the 2012 Asian Youth Championships in Sri Lanka and the 2012 World Juniors Chess Championships in Athens, Greece respectively.
Eligible to participate are boys and girls aged 20 years old and below to be divided into six categories, namely, Under-20, Under-16, Under-14, Under-10 and Under 8.
“We are very pleased that the Province of Misamis Oriental has been given the opportunity to host such a momentous national tournament . Being the first time, we will do all we can to ensure the absolute success of this event” Gov. Moreno stated “This is just the beginning, we hope that we can be more active in the development of Chess in the Country.”
Chairman Pichay rejoined “in behalf of the NCFP and all chess players in the country, I would like to share my wholehearted gratitude to Gov. Moreno and the people of Misamis Oriental. Although still in the process of recovering from the tragedy that occurred, they are still offering their full support for the sport.
The Opening Ceremonies on March 24, 2012 will be graced by Governor Oscar C. Moreno, Misamis Oriental,Province Government Officials, NCFP Chairman/President Prospero A. Pichay Jr. and other NCFP officers.
